For the people of Mumbai, Juhu beach is a landmark, a breathing space in a labyrinth of a city, for a city's beach is a major part of public consciousness. For the hundreds of people crowding the beach, the very idea of sitting on the shore and looking out at the sea is a calming prospect amidst the mad rush of the city.
The landmark beach is home to everyday people and the seldom- spotted celebrity, to cats and dogs and crows; to anyone who needs a breather from the mad rush of Mumbai streets. Here is a place where people can finally rest, and stare at the horizon in a city which hardly affords people such a luxury. For even the often filthy, chaotic Juhu beach becomes a place of respite, away from the claustrophobia of one-room apartments and narrow alleyways.
The work is meant to explore a public space that has been a huge part of Mumbai's culture ever since it came into being. From being home to the fishermen of the area to being a place where people go to unwind, Juhu beach is inseparable from Mumbai, and to understand the city completely, one must explore and understand Juhu beach. People love it, people hate it, but they keep coming back, as if it were an inevitability.
