Als «Cryptic Species» bezeichnet man in der Biologie Arten, die morphologisch, also unter Ansicht ihrer Gestalt, Struktur und Form, nicht zu unterscheiden sind und trotzdem einer anderen Art angehören. Ihre Unterschiedlichkeit zu erkennen erfordert einen Prozess, der über die sichtbare Oberfläche hinausreicht. Ausserhalb des biologischen Kontextes übersetzt eröffnet «Cryptic Species» eine Vielfalt von Deutungsmöglichkeiten. Kryptische Arten entziehen sich ihrer Lesbarkeit, kommunizieren verschlüsselt, sind uns suspekt, mehrdeutig und rätselhaft. Sie sind schwer oder überhaupt nicht zu deuten oder zu fassen. Die Auseinandersetzung mit kryptischen Arten fordert von uns Prozesse und Vorgehensweisen, die sich ausserhalb etablierter Strukturen, Normen und Gesetze bewegen.

In biologia, le “specie criptiche” sono specie che non possono essere distinte morfologicamente, né dal punto di vista della forma, della struttura né dell’aspetto e tuttavia appartengono a una specie diversa. Riconoscere la loro differenza richiede un processo che va oltre la superficie visibile. Se tradotto fuori dal contesto biologico, “Cryptic Species” apre una varietà di possibilità interpretative. Le specie criptiche sfuggono alla leggibilità, comunicano in codice, sono sospette, ambigue ed enigmatiche. Sono difficili o impossibili da interpretare. Trattare con le specie criptiche richiede quindi processi e approcci da parte nostra che si muovono al di fuori di norme, leggi o strutture stabilite.

In biology, “cryptic species” are species that cannot be distinguished morphologically, that is by looking at their shape, structure and form, and yet belong to a different species. Recognizing their difference requires a process that extends beyond the visible surface. Translated outside of its biological context, “cryptic species” opens a variety of interpretive possibilities. Cryptic species elude legibility, communicate in code, appear ambiguous and enigmatic. They are difficult or impossible to interpret or grasp. The engagement with cryptic species therefore demands processes and approaches that move outside established structures, norms and laws.
