Text about the series

Those who have traveled by autorickshaws in Mumbai would remember how they used to have mechanical meters instead of the digital ones found nowadays. Most people would also remember the “don’t touch me” painted on every meter in different fonts and sizes to ensure that the odd curious passenger doesn’t mess with the dial; for these meters were famous for their infamously escalated readings. Most people would also remember keeping an eye on this dubious machine, as the readings would fall like raindrops, many a times resulting in an argument with the rickshaw driver over his tampered meter. The distress caused by the meter was a unique one, causing many a soul to suffer in silent agony as it raced even while the auto was stranded in traffic.

The explanation afforded by a defensive rickshaw driver, after first insisting that his meter was not faulty in the least bit, was that inflation didn’t allow him to break even without tweaking his meter a tad bit, and that he didn’t see any harm in it as almost everyone did it.

The old mechanical meters have now been replaced by fancy digital ones and people no longer have to argue over tampered meters, missing or incorrect tariff cards or the rickshaw drivers family problems. The new meter has changed the way our auto rickshaw journeys end.
